What is Dumpster Diving?
- Is usually referred to either find items that have been discarded by their owners in commercial or residential trash or Stealing mail from unlocked mailboxes to obtain newly issued credit cards, bank and credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, investment reports, insurance statements, or tax information.
- Unfortunately, even locked mailboxes may not stop the most determined thief, especially in a large apartment complex.
- Always take credit card receipts (charge-slips) with you. Never toss them in a public trash container. When shopping, put receipts in your wallet rather than in the shopping bag. Though first 12 digits of your credit card number in most of charge-slips these days are masked, there are machines out there who print the entire number.
- Watch the mail when you expect a new or reissued credit card to arrive. Contact the issuer if the card does not arrive.
- Ensure you completely destroy the documents / slips which are of no use to you.
